Our Story

Adam’s Light was created in memory of Adam Clarke. A vibrant, kind, and funny young man who died by suicide at just 19 years old.

Adam’s loss, sudden and without warning, changed the lives of those who loved him and revealed a painful truth that too many families experience this devastation without ever seeing the signs.

Adam’s story became the catalyst for a charity committed to ensuring that others might be spared the same heartbreak. In 2025, Lauren Carvalho, Adam’s mum, and Sadie Moore founded Adam’s Light, bringing together lived experience, professional expertise, and a shared belief that education, conversation, and early intervention can save lives.

After losing Adam, and driven by a desire to create change, Lauren retrained as a counsellor and became a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP). She later qualified as a Mental Health First Aid England Instructor, accredited by the Royal Society for Public Health. For more than a decade, Lauren has worked with schools, businesses, and community organisations to strengthen mental health and wellbeing strategies.

Throughout this time, she has counselled countless individuals impacted by suicide... far too many. Recognising that prevention starts with education and conversation, it became clear that schools, while open and willing, often lacked the resources needed to address this subject. Adam's Light was born from a shared determination to change that.

Lauren's clinical background and lived experience are very much at the heart of Adam's Light. Together, Lauren and Sadie guide the charity with a shared commitment to support young people and carry a light forward, creating spaces where they can feel hopeful.

My Son, Adam

Adam was bright, funny, and so very loved. He was the life and soul of every room, the friend everyone turned to, and the fierce protector of his younger siblings, Harry and Kristy. Yet in 2011, my beautiful son took his own life.

There were no warning signs. No cries for help. The idea that we could lose someone so full of life to suicide was unimaginable. His devastating loss shattered our family. It changed our lives forever, and we continue to feel his absence every day.

Adam’s story is the reason we do this work. It is the reason Adam’s Light exists. Every time I stand in front of young people and share Adam’s story, I feel him with me. I cannot bring my son back, but we can honour his memory by trying to ensure other families might be spared the same heartbreaking devastation.

I love you, son. I miss you everyday.
